Review: The Silkworm by Robert Galgraith *cough* JK Rowling *cough*

the silkworm

Cormoran Strike would probably be a very hard person to like if he were real. He’s gruff, sometimes insensitive, often clueless despite being quite intelligent and can be quite rude. However, that doesn’t stop me from utterly loving him on the page. I know he’s flawed, he’s a pain in the ass and yes, sometimes it does suck to hear about how little he is able to take care of himself as a grown man. And he really needs to learn to give Robin her due, but despite that I love this book, I love him in this book and I adore this series.

The mystery was gruesome, as was the crime scene and the book within a book. JK Rowling’s writing has evolved quite a bit since the Harry Potter series although there was still lots of filler at times and the character growth is quite good. Cormoran is slightly better at allowing others to do things for him, and in one moment actually quite considerate of Robin. Robin seems better at standing up for herself in this book, and still remains my kinda gal with her need for adventure, and her ambition.

This was a big time page turner for me, and I found myself going beyond my five chapters at a time, to reaching for ten, for fifteen. I craved the ending, yet, i didn’t want it to end.

4. Your favourite book in your favourite series

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K Rowling

This is one of my favourite books. Period. That’s all there is to it. I can’t even speak to what it is about it. Perhaps it’s because it introduces two of the characters I had the most hope for in the entire series.

Sirius Black, enigmatic, and slightly mysterious, whose had a hard life. And Remus Lupin, loyal (perhaps to a fault), and one of those creatures that goes bump in the night.

It’s the hope in this novel that gets me, Harry’s hope for a family, Sirius’ hope for a future, Remus’ hope for a new life.

Everyone who knows me knows that because I love this book so much, that the movie was a huge disappointment to me.

3. Your Favourite Series

Harry Potter by J.K Rowling

The series I didn’t really want to read. It was soo popular, everyone loved it. I was 1o or 11 and even then didn’t want to read something that everyone else was reading. I was more mature than that, I was reading Jane Eyre (and not understanding the nuances of it).

But then, in eighth grade, when I was old enough to realize that I could read what I want and damn the consequences what anyone else thought of them I picked up the first book.

It sucked me in. It sucked me in so much that even into my high school years my sister (nine years older than me) and myself, sometimes with my mum would end up at Chapters at midnight to pick up the latest book, despite our pre-order of it (I even met a future ex-bf at one).

I loved the characters, I loved the fandom, I loved the feeling of talking about theories, of imagining what would happen next. The anticipation of it all, the new friends I gained because of these books.

This was the first series I really fell for that stuck with me.

Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone by JK Rowling

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Harry Potter, #1)Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A definite re-read for me, and still one of the most charming books I’ve ever read. There is not a time where I’ve re-read these books that I haven’t fallen directly into the magical world once again.

J.K Rowling isn’t an amazing, wonderful technical writer, but she writes her characters with such heart that any flaws seem to fall by the wayside. I love this book as it is, an introduction to something so much more, and a world that has grown beyond just literature.
