My Thoughts:
I think many of us have stayed in a relationship because it felt routine, it felt safe and it was what we were used to. Some of us maybe also made ourselves smaller, less loud and different in order to keep that comfort with us.
And when that comfort gets taken away? It can lead to some slightly irrational decisions and then questioning those decisions.
Chip Pons has created some seriously loveable characters in this book, so much so that I didn’t want to leave them behind.
Asher is a people pleaser. He’s a little awkward, he has had his blinders on a little bit when it comes to his relationship but at his core I actually found him to be a really brave character. He is one of the reasons this novel is so full of heart, and warmth. He never takes risks but in this book he does, and it pays off in more ways than one, in a way I truly love but won’t spoil for you.
Theo needs a better work-life balance. So much so that the thought of not working and having to face everything he’s been avoiding for so long that he flings himself into an impossible, but often amusing situation. Fake boyfriend? He can do it. Real boyfriend? He’s a little more gun shy when it comes to that. He is charismatic to a fault, and these two are precious together.
Full confession: The thought of Amazing Race or Amazing Race Canada and being a contestant on either has always thrilled me. Because of that this book was wildly entertaining for me, and not because like when I watch the show I think I could do better but because I would be Asher and Theo exactly in these circumstances. A walking, freaking out disaster.
Especially the snakes. And I thought food challenges would be hard to read about (I usually fast forward them on TV).
In a world where reality TV seems to skip the reality portion, this plot makes perfect sense when paired with the fake dating trope. Hell, it even makes sense when it comes to the forced proximity trope, and man is it delicious.
It was easy to fall in love with this book, and these characters. And this? This has made Chip a must-buy for me.
