Title: Assistant to the Villain
Author: Hannah Nicole Maehrer
Series: Assistant to the Villain
About this book:
ASSISTANT WANTED: Notorious, high-ranking villain seeks loyal, levelheaded assistant for unspecified office duties, supporting staff for random mayhem and terror, and other Dark Things In General. Discretion a must. Excellent benefits.
With ailing family to support, Evie Sage’s employment status isn’t just important, it’s vital. So when a mishap with Rennedawn’s most infamous Villain results in a job offer―naturally, she says yes. No job is perfect, of course, but even less so when you develop a teeny crush on your terrifying, temperamental, and undeniably hot boss. Don’t find evil so attractive, Evie.
But just when she’s getting used to severed heads suspended from the ceiling and the odd squish of an errant eyeball beneath her heel, Evie suspects this dungeon has a huge rat…and not just the literal kind. Because something rotten is growing in the kingdom of Rennedawn, and someone wants to take the Villain―and his entire nefarious empire―out.
Now Evie must not only resist drooling over her boss but also figure out exactly who is sabotaging his work…and ensure he makes them pay.
After all, a good job is hard to find.
My Thoughts:
I don’t know why I waited so long to read this book to be honest. Was it just because I didn’t buy a copy or that my library had a huge hold list? Let me tell you, as soon as I get paid I will be making sure not to only buy this book but the two that follow because dang, this is one good book.
This book can be laugh out loud funny, and then can make you grip it in tension as you try to figure out what’s happening to people who will definitely become your favourite characters, just trust me on that one.
If you’re not in the mood for heavy fantasy with too much lore involved in it, you are in the right place when it comes to this book, which somehow quickly and efficiently explains the fairy-tale-like world that these characters were born into without it being boring. Even though this is a lighter explanation, fantasy-wise, somehow I could picture the setting so well in my head.
Evie is a character who is not as sweet as she seems, and more cunning than you can imagine. She is clever, and witty and wickedly efficient (as the Villain learns), and she cares so much.
The Villain, well, you’ll have to read this book to see but he is definitely a character, without seeming too ridiculous.
There is also a element of mystery to this, without too much gore which is nice.
This book is clever and a quick read. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to count the minutes until I can afford the next one. That being said, this seems to be a ‘you love it or you hate it’ book. I just so happen to love it. Buy it and decide for yourself.
